Dawn Gorman at the Red House (East Coker Poetry Group)
9th February 2016, 7:30pm - 9:00pm, The Red House, Dorchester Road, Yeovil, BA22 9RA
I'm the guest poet at East Coker Poetry Group, at the kind invitation of David Cloke. The event, which I'm told regularly attracts 20-30 poetry lovers, runs from 7.30pm - 9pm. Entrance is £2 on the door. Note that the event isn't at its usual venue, but at the interestingly named Red House. The story of the name (worth a poem, I reckon), is this:
The name Red House derives from the name Redlings. The rich, arable land around the pub is reddish in colour. During the 19th Century the local agricultural labourers who worked on the land would become covered in this red soil. Other Inns didn't welcome their custom as invariably they left red mud in their premises. However, the Red House did. To begin with, it was known as Redlings but as time passed, it became The Red House and the present red front door is a tribute to this.
So now you know.
